Venture Capital Journal: Are Things Looking Up for Emerging Managers?

Bob Curley, Deputy Chief Banking Officer at Western Alliance, joined Venture Capital Journal as one of several industry voices contributing insight into how emerging venture managers are navigating today’s fundraising environment.

Drawing on his experience working closely with both long-standing VC firms and newly formed spinouts, Curley shares his perspective on where emerging managers are gaining traction. He mentions that many successful teams are “taking what their practice was within the larger shop and making it a more focused, more streamlined approach,” often concentrating on sectors where they have deep expertise. Curley also highlights that Limited Partners (LPs) are responding to managers whose portfolios show early indicators of disciplined execution including companies raising follow-on rounds, securing step-ups or demonstrating operational progress. He notes that this dynamic is especially visible in sectors like AI, where managers with concentrated sector expertise and a well-defined thesis are securing meaningful LP attention. His observations reflect a shift toward prioritizing clarity, specialization and demonstrated investment judgment over pedigree or scale.

The full article evaluates whether fundraising conditions are improving for emerging venture managers, highlighting recent fund raises, the rising importance of operator experience and the evolving LP focus on track record and specialization.
