Green Our Planet
Cultivating Financial Literacy in Nevada Schools, One Seed at a Time
Imagine a classroom where the lessons extend beyond textbooks to growing real-world skills. Thanks to a sponsorship between Western Alliance Bank and Green Our Planet in Nevada, this vision is taking root. It's a story not just about financial literacy, but about nurturing a generation of financially educated citizens.
Western Alliance Bank proudly supports Green Our Planet’s innovative STEM school garden and hydroponics program, enriching more than 200 Las Vegas schools and more than 400 schools across the state of Nevada. More than simply growing vegetables, this initiative integrates Nevada’s first comprehensive K-12 financial literacy curriculum. Here, students learn about budgeting, pricing and marketing, while nurturing gardens and harvesting produce to sell.
Students are digging in the dirt one day and then planning their farmers market products the next. Twice a year, these young entrepreneurs sell their harvests and handcrafted goods to the public.
Western Alliance Bank volunteers share their expertise, teaching everything from cost analysis to writing compelling promotional materials. On market day, up to 80 volunteers join the students, providing invaluable assistance with sales skills, decision-making and transactions.
Recognizing the desire to empower even more students, Western Alliance Bank also supported the creation of a video curriculum that enables teachers across the state to independently include financial literacy in their lessons. This video extends the program’s reach to every school in Nevada, with bank volunteers continuing to offer their support. It is another platform for teaching important skills.
The collaboration with Green Our Planet is rooted in a shared vision for community betterment. It’s cultivating the well-being of the Nevada community while laying the groundwork for future entrepreneurs. Financial literacy can change lives, one seed at a time.
