In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, the University of West Los Angeles is a unique institution, offering a distinct blend of academic excellence and innovation. Established in 1966, this dynamic university today consists of both a law school and a business school.

Serving approximately 300 students across two campuses, one near Los Angeles International Airport and one in Woodland Hills, the university offers unique flexibility for their students, who largely are working adults. While students technically choose a home campus, they can attend classes at either location, providing maximum convenience. In addition to traditional programs, every classroom at the university has been fully outfitted for virtual instruction as well, allowing students to learn from anywhere.

“With the help of financing through Torrey Pines Bank, we’ve invested quite a bit of money into state-of-the-art technology that maintains the integrity and efficacy of our programs in an online environment,” shared Robert W. Brown, president of the University of West Los Angeles.

Brown has served as president of the university for 25 years and is a passionate advocate for the university’s growth and future prospects. His commitment to evolving the university’s approach, expanding the business school, and forging partnerships with community colleges and major corporations illustrates the university’s commitment to innovation and access to affordable, quality education.

One relationship that’s been instrumental to the university’s success is its partnership with Torrey Pines Bank. “Torrey Pines Bank is my bank. I’m very loyal to those that are loyal to our business and all of our stakeholders are extremely important to me,” said Brown. “Torrey Pines Bank, in my estimation, is a partner and a stakeholder in what we do.”

It’s a partnership that has helped the university get through difficult times like the COVID pandemic, as Brown recalls that “Torrey Pines Bank was instrumental in helping us get our PPP loan. With the big banks, sometimes the small businesses were getting lost, and with the smaller banks, many just didn’t get it. Torrey Pines Bank came to us and said, ‘we’re going to get this for you’ and they did.”

It’s also a partnership that ensures the university is safeguarded against other economic challenges it may face.

“Having a bank with the strength and resources of Torrey Pines Bank is extremely important for us and for our future.”

At the end of the day, Brown knows that the bank has his back. “Torrey Pines Bank trusting us and supporting us has been essential to the University of West Los Angeles achieving our goals.”
