Bank of Nevada Receives Community Commitment Award From American Bankers Association Foundation
Bank of Nevada is receiving national recognition for its efforts to promote financial literacy education among Southern Nevada students who are participating in the Green Our Planet school garden program.
This is the first time a Nevada financial institution has been honored with the prestigious Community Commitment Award for Financial Education from the American Bankers Association (ABA) Foundation. Bank of Nevada will be officially recognized for its work to increase financial literacy among students at the ABA Annual Convention in New York on October 23, 2018.
This recognition is the result of Bank of Nevada’s alliance with Green Our Planet which has placed more than 150 gardens on elementary and middle school campuses in Southern Nevada. Bank of Nevada worked with six other financial institutions in Southern Nevada to bring the financial literacy program they developed with Green Our Planet to 15 schools, impacting over 800 fifth grade students. The curriculum was developed according to Nevada Standards and includes banker-led classroom discussions.
The skills acquired from the financial literacy lessons assisted young learners during a student farmers’ market which included school garden-grown produce and other items. Forty-one schools in the Clark County School District took part in the market which was held at the Bank of Nevada Sahara office in May of 2018, attracting hundreds of customers and raising a combined $9,000 for school garden projects.
“I am extremely proud of what our team at Bank of Nevada accomplished by working with Green Our Planet to bring important financial literacy lessons directly to students,” said John Guedry, CEO of Bank of Nevada. “The farmers’ market gave the students a perfect opportunity to use the financial literacy skills and knowledge they learned in class and will use in the future,” he said.
“The Green Our Planet student farmers’ market was a huge success thanks to Bank of Nevada and its dedicated volunteers who made our program even more beneficial by incorporating financial literacy into the curriculum,” said Ciara Byrne, Founder, Co-Executive Director, Green Our Planet. “We are so pleased to see Bank of Nevada recognized for its outstanding support of students and our community.” she said.
More than 70 banks submitted nominations for the Financial Education category. Of those 70, just six nominations made it into the final selection process where Bank of Nevada was selected as the winner.
The ABA is the voice of the nation’s $17 trillion banking industry, which is composed of small, medium and large banks that together employ more than two million people, safeguard $13 trillion in deposits and extend nearly $10 trillion in loans.
